Music Dance Theatre Program Policies
The Music Dance Theatre (MDT) program is committed to developing artists who excel in their craft while reflecting the values of faith, integrity, and service. Our policies are designed to provide structure, foster discipline, and create opportunities for growth that align with our vision of preparing Christ-centered artists who uplift and inspire through performance.
First-Year Requirements
- First-year students may not participate in off-campus productions or projects.
- During the first year, students are expected to focus on required coursework, training, and on-campus performance opportunities to build a strong foundation in the program.
Mission Deferment
- Students planning to serve an LDS mission are required to complete one full year in the MDT program before departing.
- This foundation year provides critical training and preparation that will support student success upon return.
Performing Group Participation
- Students may participate in a BYU performing group (Young Ambassadors, CDT, Ballroom, Folk Dance etc) for a maximum of two years.
- This policy ensures that all students have opportunities to grow in a variety of performance settings and can graduate in a timely manner.
On-Campus Performance Requirement
- Each student must complete two on-campus performance experiences, which will include participation in at least one mainstage production.
- These experiences are essential to developing professional-level performance skills in collaboration with faculty and peers.
In addition to the above policies, all Theatre and Media Arts students are expected to know and abide by the department policies, which can be found here: TMA Department Policies
