Music Dance Theatre

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)

The Music Dance Theatre (MDT) program is an interdisciplinary degree program within the Theatre and Media Arts Department and fully supported by the School of Music and the Department of Dance. It is a limited enrollment program designed to train performers for a career in musical theatre and related performance disciplines. The MDT program at BYU is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre, Music, and Dance leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree.

BYU MDT training emphasizes:

VOCAL—Expert instruction in a variety of musical theatre vocal styles inclusive of mix/belt, classical and pop/rock.

DANCING—Extensive work in jazz, contemporary, ballet, tap and ballroom.

ACTING—Focused training in acting techniques such as Stanislavsky, Uta Hagen, and Sanford Meisner.

PRODUCTIONS—The Theatre and Media Arts Department produces both main stage productions as well as many secondary and workshop productions. Extensive film opportunities are also available.

OFF-CAMPUS—MDT students work consistently for major regional summer theatre companies such as the MUNY, Tuacahn Amphitheater, Music Theatre Wichita, Sacramento Music Circus, Jackson Hole Playhouse, Hale Center Theatre and others.

TOURING—Students may audition for national and international touring opportunities with Young Ambassadors, a musical theatre ensemble presenting a highly produced Broadway-style revue.

CAREER BUILDING — Students receive training throughout their time in the MDT program regarding career preparation, including how to ‘brand’ and ‘market’ yourself as well as a thorough practical investigation of the business of music theatre.

SENIOR SHOWCASE—MDT students have the opportunity to participate in a showcase that is presented to industry professionals in New York City. Students also have the opportunity to participate in workshops and coaching sessions with industry professionals.
