The Theatre and Media Arts Department sponsors two London study abroad programs for students. London has a rich history of performing arts and wide ranging opportunities in film and theatre. Study abroad programs like these offer students a breadth of experience that will enrich their lives and learning.

LONDON FILM STUDY ABROAD

DETAILS

London Film will expose students to the best repertory programs, the most thorough retrospectives, and the most wide-ranging commercially distributed film offerings in the world. We will not only enjoy the films themselves, but also a host of exemplary scholarly resources (lectures, artist interviews, scholarly notes) relating to the films. In addition, our program will be distinguished by its emphasis on the ancestor arts, as well as its access to some of the world’s greatest art institutions. Film is a combination and occasionally a culmination of all of the media that have gone before. Film practitioners and scholars alike will be enriched and deepened by their exposure to London’s inexhaustible supply of great plays, paintings, buildings, design objects, etc.

FUNDING SOURCES

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to Study Abroad programs. Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application, and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB), will be considered for a Study Abroad scholarship. Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants. Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see http://kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships/).

You may also apply for a London Media Arts Merit Scholarship through the Theatre & Media Arts Department.

LONDON THEATRE STUDY ABROAD

Each Spring semester, the TMA Department sponsors a London Theatre study abroad trip. This program is ideal for English, theatre, humanities, and creative writing students but will offer breadth, enjoyment, and a rich learning opportunity to students of any major. Students will experience some of the best theatre the world has to offer, attending a broad variety of plays—from Shakespeare to contemporary theatre—performed by some of the greatest dramatic companies presented in some of the greatest theatre spaces around. Courses in theatre and in Shakespeare will make attending these plays more meaningful. London also offers ballet, symphonies, museums, cathedrals, gardens, and walks through buildings constructed long before the U.S. became a country.

DETAILS

Students will spend six weeks studying and attending theatre productions at the Royal National Theatre, the recently reconstructed Globe theatre, the mainstream West End theatres, and the lesser-known but highly imaginative smaller stages of London. Students will also spend a few days in Stratford-upon-Avon seeing performances by the Royal Shakespeare Company and visiting the historic Shakespeare sites.
