Spooktacular Film Festival rekindles and invigorates the Student Film Association

Capping off October with the Spooktacular film festival, the Student Film Association (SFA) enjoyed the success of a BYU-wide spectacle of spooky student films.

Students from all over campus submitted 3-6 minute creative works that were screened at the festival. To make the opportunity more accessible to non-TMA majors, students were able to take advantage of film equipment from the library, with some students even submitting fabulous works shot straight on their phones.

Says SFA president Soren Fonnesbeck, “The whole point of SFA isn’t just about students in film, but about film itself. Film is something that is accessed by everyone in the world. It shouldn’t just be this thing that a small chunk of students on campus can access. The whole point is to foster this opportunity to make something, and that extends to everybody.”

Spooky season was the golden opportunity for SFA to make the comeback that launched them into expansion. It all started with Soren’s love for the horror genre and desire to bring more opportunities to student filmmakers. Having previously studied in New York City, Soren wanted to bring that bustling culture of opportunity and exposure to Provo through giving students more spaces to showcase their work. But at the beginning of the semester, SFA was down to few members and not a lot of recognition. After revitalizing SFA with the new project, weekly attendance at meetings began to rise, and SFA now has plans for monthly activities with its many committed members. Over 100 people attended Spooktacular, with estimations only to grow next year. If you missed out, it’s never too early to mark your calendar for the second annual Spooktacular coming next Halloween!
