Monkey Business

Exclusive Vintage Film Projection!

Absentminded scientist Barnaby Fulton will discover a formula, which he hopes will reverse the ill effects of aging, yet has some unintended consequences: Zany consequences, in fact.

A charming throwback film to the screwball era of the 1930s and 40s, the film shares the trademark rapid-fire dialogue and zany situations typical of other comedies by Howard Hawks.

This is a great example of Cary Grant’s physical comedy prowess. If you only know him playing debonair romantic lead characters, or in a Hitchcock thriller, here is your chance to see another side of his career.

Ginger Rogers will also showcase her energy and spunk she could still bring even after 20 years in the industry.

The working title of this film was “Darling, I Am Growing Younger.”

Before and after the film's above-title cast credits, there is a shot of Cary Grant coming out of a house, and an offscreen voice tells him "Not yet, Cary." Grant then goes back inside the house. According to a modern source, the voice is that of director Howard Hawks.

Monkey Business marked the fifth and final collaboration between Grant and Hawks, after films: Only Angels Have Wings, Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, I Was a Male War Bride.

We have this film to dovetail with the fact that we have a collection of Howard Hawks’ personal papers in Special Collections! Including a script of this title that was rejected by the Breen office.

I am excited to review this print and the film. Come be a part of this!

From last week:

MIGHTY JOE YOUNG was tonally different than the two KONG films, but stands up in its own right. The stop-motion animation is smoother and certainly more expressive.

You also missed a drunk gorilla (mini-Kong) trashing a night club.
