We’re celebrating James Stewart’s birthday by recognizing his love of flying. At the start of World War II he had 400 hours of civilian flying time. After joining the military he received more training and earned his pilot wings. He served as the Commanding Officer of the 703d Bomb Squadron in England. He retired from the military in 1968 with the rank of brigadier general.

The Flight of the Phoenix follows the survivors of a cargo plane crash in the desert.
