Biography

Kelly Loosli is a 28-year veteran of the entertainment industry having worked extensively in live action and animation for commercials, television, and feature film for leading companies including DreamWorks Feature Animation and Buena Vista Motion Pictures (the live action feature film division of Disney).

Mr. Loosli has been responsible for supervising and coordinating global production efforts on various projects, including a project with voices recorded in London, creative development in Utah and California, animation production in Hungary and Spain, and musical score recorded in the Czech Republic.

Mr. Loosli is the co-creator of the Animation Program at Brigham Young University (otherwise known as BYU) where he currently also serves as the director of the program. He teaches traditional animation, storyboarding and visual development classes while overseeing the creation of both traditional and computer animated projects.

In the fourteen years that the Brigham Young University Animation program has been competing with films they have won 17 Student Emmy Awards (Television Academy of Arts and Sciences Award) and 5 Student Academy Awards (Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences). Their films have played all over the world including Cannes, Annecy Animation Festival in Annecy, France, Siggraph, and the Sundance Film Festival.

Ed Catmull (Co-creator and President of Pixar Animation Studios and President of Walt Disney Animation) stated, “All of a sudden, in the last few years, we have found BYU has risen to the top. BYU has an extraordinary program here.” Pixar and Sony Animation Studios/Sony Imageworks actively mentor the program. Additionally Disney, DreamWorks, Lucas Film, Weta Digital, Blue Sky, Digital Domain and Rhythm and Hues all actively recruit the graduates.

Loosli was written up as one of ten professors listed in the Leaders in Learning article in the April 8, 2010 issue of Variety.

Mr. Loosli has previously worked on a variety of projects including Prince of Egypt, El Dorado, Antz, Chicken Run, The Sixth Sense, Armageddon, Mighty Joe Young, Rushmore, and Gone in 60 Seconds. He served as Visual Development Supervisor on Shrek and Spirit and as Line Producer on The Princess and the Pea, The Princess and the Pea Chronicles, and The Velveteen Rabbit. Kelly has also directed, written, or supervised the creation of numerous, award-winning short 3D animated film projects including The Terrible Tooth, Las Piñatas, Der Ostwind, Noggin, Turtles, Faux Paw the Techno Cat, PetShop, Lemmings, and others.

With the animation program now firmly developed and having received tenure at the University Mr. Loosli is now focusing on his writing and directing independent live action and animated properties.

Kelly Loosli earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Screenwriting from Brigham Young University in 1996, and currently resides in Salt Lake City, Utah with his wife and two children.
