Profile: Stephen Purdy teaches TMA 368 Scenic Painting for the BYU Theatre Department and also teaches full time at Utah Valley University in the Theatre Department courses for Stagecraft, Design, Period Styles and Scenic Painting. He graduated from BYU with a BA in Communications/Advertising and then worked for over 25 years in the motion picture and television industry in Los Angeles, California, primarily at Universal City Studios where he was the set painter for many television shows and motion pictures including “Murder, She Wrote,” “Sixteen Candles,” and “The Breakfast Club.” As the resident set designer at UVU and he has worked on over 20 productions at the school as the designer or design mentor and is the recipient of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival National Outstanding Scenic Design award in 2012 for the UVU production Vincent in Brixton. He has also designed seven shows for the Sundance Summer Outdoor Theatre most recently Fiddler on the Roof. Stephen lives in Highland, Utah, with his wife and has three grown children and two grandchildren.
