Profile: Ben Phelan is an adjunct professor in the theatre and media arts department at Brigham Young University. He received his BA from BYU in 2008 and his PhD from Louisiana State University in 2017. his dissertation, The Machine Gun Hand: Robots and Ideology in America, 1893-Present, examines how robots in performance throughout the 20th and 21st centuries are used as ideological tools. Besides his dissertation topic, he has research interests in literary theory, popular culture, video games, and Mormon history. Ben Phelan is an active member of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, and has served as an editorial assistant for the religion and theatre journal Ecumenica. He is also an actor and director. A few favorite directing credits include The Matchmaker, The Lesson, and Drums in the Night.
