Sam joined the BYU faculty in the Fall of 2019. After completing a BFA in Music Dance Theatre here at BYU, he worked for three years at the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City. His professional theatre work is chiefly linked to his work with the Church—performing and associate directing several seasons for the Nauvoo and British Pageants in Nauvoo, IL, and Savior of the World at the Conference Center Theatre in Salt Lake City, UT. His Church theatre work has also extended internationally, as he collaborated with a binational and bilingual creative team to develop and produce the first non-English Church pageant and national broadcast event in Mexico City, México: Un Legado de Fe y Sacrificio, celebrating the history and growth of the Church in Mexico as the gateway to Latin America, and he also co-directed, music directed, and performed in the Church’s UK national broadcast event Voices of the Great War in London, England, commemorating 100 years since the Armistice of WWI. Sam also worked as an associate director for Our Roots, a BYU Women’s Conference theatrical devotional live event and broadcast, which was later produced to be aired on BYUtv. After his time working at Church headquarters, Sam and his family moved to England to pursue a Masters degree in voice, synthesizing his theatre background and corporate leadership in the Church offices. Alongside his teaching at BYU— which focuses on breath, fully-embodied impulse, honesty, and textual interpretation— Sam delivers similar principles in private coaching for business professionals to improve personal authenticity and communication/presentation skills in the workplace. Sam is a member of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA) and the Musical Theatre Educators Association (MTEA). He and his wife, Kendra, are the parents of five beautiful and energetic children.
