    Profile: Lisa Kirkwood Bean, PhD, has been adjunct faculty in the Theatre and Media Arts Department since 1985. Dr. Bean co-developed “Drama in the Elementary Classroom” in 1996 at the request of the David O. McKay School of Education. The course provides foundational knowledge of basic drama skills and empowerment to use drama techniques in teaching core curricula within the K-6 school setting.

    As drama coach for Meridian Middle School, Dr. Bean’s students competed successfully in the Utah Shakespearean/SUU High School Competition in Cedar City, garnering Superior ratings for monologue and ensemble scenes and placement in the final showcase. Dr. Bean directed James and the Giant PeachThe Tempest and The Candy Bomber at Wasatch Elementary in Provo. While serving as Artistic Director for the Pleasant Grove Youth Theatre, she directed productions of Once on This IslandTom SawyerThe Chinese Emperor’s Clothes and African Tales.

    Her reader’s theatre adaption of The Long Road: From Vermont to Carthage is published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Lisa interned as Assistant Director at The Hartman Theatre in Stamford, Connecticut, working with notable directors Ed Sherin (Hartman’s Artistic Director) and Elinor Renfield (Circle in the Square Theatre), and actors Dana Delany, Jan Miner, Fritz Weaver, and Tammy Grimes. College directing credits include Suffer the little Children and Ordinary People, each of which won Best Graduate Director awards. Dr. Bean serves in the Nebo School District as a Drama Arts Specialist coordinating the placement of the theatrical arts within twenty-six elementary schools.
