Whether in a concert arena, on an iPhone, in a karaoke bar, or in a rehearsal roommusic is always performed. What this suggests is that not only do the lyrics and sounds of the music generate meaning for an audience, but so does the entirety of the music event. From ABBA to Ziggy Stardust takes seriously the role that music plays in our lives and how that meaning is inextricably tied to performance. In this class, we will examine what and how musicians mean through their performances of music, how music events reflect and construct their unique cultural worlds, and how music itself can be performative and even theatrical in its production of body and space. Along the way, we will explore a variety of musicians/acts, genres, media, conventions, etc., the entire time keenly focusing on performance and performativity.

Although TMA 395 is listed as a prereq for this course, students without this prereq can contact Wade Hollingshaus for a permission-to-add code.

The SFA is hosting a semester kick-off in the WCAS this Friday! Well be talking about the calendar for events like the Public Domain Film And Music Festival, Final Cut, AFPs, and other MA stuff. New MA majors are encouraged to attend. There will also be free pizza! See you Friday!

Several years before his death in 1973, Wayne E. Mayhew of Berkeley, California, established a trust fund to provide annual awards in creative writing and fine arts at Brigham Young University in honor of his wife, Vera Hinckley Mayhew, a former BYU student. The first contest, in short story writing, began in 19631964 and has continued annually since then. A second contest, in poetry writing, began in 19741975. Then in 19781979 four additional contests were started. Since that time, two additional contests were added, making eight annual contests in total.

Please read and comply with the following submission guidelines:

Contest applicants must be enrolled as full-time students (at least 12 credits for undergrad and 6 credits for graduate students) at Brigham Young University in either semester of the 2022-2023 school year. No applicant may have worked as a professional screenwriter for theatrical films or sold screen or television rights to any original story, treatment, screenplay or teleplay.

Prize money for this competition is $1,750. In addition, some scripts will have the opportunity of being considered (1) as part of the TMA Writers Conference, or (2) for potential departmental production.

Contest Categories:

Submit a 1 to 8 page tightly crafted script that could be considered viable for an on-campus student film. Samples of student films can be checked out from the HBLL.

Submit a single episode from a web or scripted podcast series, not to exceed 8 pages. Your cover page, under the title, must indicate whether the script is a web or podcast series.

Submit the first 10 pages of a completed episode for an existing 30-minute television sitcom in current production; or, the first 10 pages of an original 30-minute television episode.

1. Each student may submit up to three entries. Though scripts selected for AFP production are not eligible, scripts not yet submitted for AFP consideration are eligible. For each entry the student will submit their scripts individually online at:

2. Submissions must comply with standard screenplay formatting. If you have questions regarding formatting, see the

(D. Trottier). Adaptations are not accepted for this competition. Submissions must be the original work of the applicant and may not be based, in whole or in part, on any other persons fictional material, published or unpublished; OR, if the script is a television spec episode, writers must identify the name of the sitcom and the current network airing the series in the Mayhew Submission Sheet. Scripts that fail to comply with standard formatting or page length requirements are disqualified and will not be reviewed.

3. For collaborative submissions, all collaborators must comply with the full-time student requirements. Awards will be split among the collaborators.

4. Each script must have a title page with the title of the script and the students BYU ID number. If it is a collaborative effort, the submitters BYU ID number will be listed first. No authors name should not appear on the script or title page, just on the submission form. The pages must be numbered. No additional materials should be attached to the script (i.e. letters or recommendation, alternate pages, mention of awards, etc.). Entries submitted incorrectly are disqualified and will not be reviewed.

5. Submissions will be accepted between January 9th and February 3rd, 2023. Winners will be announced in early April.

Judging will be conducted by the TMA Writing Committee. The standards for evaluation will include assessments of:

Brevity and Efficiency

Character Rendering

Tension/Conflict

Dialogue

Causation

Cinematic Elements

Research/Plausibility

Compliance with the BYU AIMS document

All scripts are to be created in accordance with the values and standards associated with the University Honor Code and the TMA Viewing and Creation Policy (available online). This is not to say that a script needs to be overtly religious or that it cannot examine challenging issues; it is simply a reminder that gratuitously offensive material will not be considered.

This week we are featuring YELLOW SKY (1948) this THURSDAY at 3pm in the Library Auditorium.

We are keeping our screenings on Thursdays at 3pm this semester.

We are grabbing a potpourri of fantastic films on celluloid. Please consider coming or letting others know about these great screenings.

YELLOW SKY is a 1948 American Western film directed by William A. Wellman and starring Gregory Peck, Richard Widmark, and Anne Baxter. The story is believed to be loosely adapted from William Shakespeare's THETEMPEST.

THE TEMPEST was also loosely adapted for FORBIDDEN PLANET (1956) last summer, so here is a Western also inspired for comparison.

Post-war Westerns considerably grew in complexity and maturity, in many ways. The stories, the cinematography, and the all received added depth in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Come see this great example of a film that is a good exemplar for a run-of-the-mill Western, but the bar is raised so far that it really has some considerable craftsmanship and excellence.

Why we have this in our archive: Most likely it is because the opening and closing music was taken from Alfred Newman's score for the Twentieth Century-Fox film Brigham Young (1940), which was also written by Lamar Trotti.

Come see the Hollywood machine producing a consistent and well-crafted film.

Come see some fantastic cinematography, where the camera is a (heavy) physical object and each shot had to actually film something in reality

Looking for an experienced female film student to accompany BYU Dance Education Students to Costa Rica June 3-16th, 2023 to document a research project. The film student will be responsible for filming interviews, dance teaching experiences, as well as creating a screendance (artistically filming and editing a dance), which will be filmed on location with a Costa Rican dance group. The cost of the trip will be covered for the film student and a stipend given for editing the footage.

Experience in documentary filmmaking and experience in dance and/or filming dance is a plus. Looking for an individual who is a creative collaborator. Interested parties should reach out to Karen Jensen, BYU Dance Professor by December 16th, 2022 at karendjensen@byu.edu
