Janet Swenson has been hard at work this year as the costume designer for Tuacahn’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. With 39 actors, 50 onstage choir members, and more than two hundred individual costumes, she and her assistants—niece Danielle, and former students Mary Bosen and Mallory (Mackay) Blakemore—have been extremely busy. Another former student, Dallin Blankenship, is creating the masks for gargoyles, imps and dragons!
Besides having a ball choosing the rich color palettes and textures for each of the costumes, they’ve figured out how to use a fruit basket as a hat, a new metallic fabric for armor, and have created the most innovative arm shields! Janet has loved working with Tim Threlfall, the director; Karl Wesson, who is doing makeup and hair; and the scenic designer, Brad Shelton. The show opens on August 5, and will play in rep with Peter Pan and Tarzan, which open in June.
This is Janet’s sixth season with Tuacahn. In addition to Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and Fiddler on the Roof, she designed Mary Poppins, Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Beauty and the Beast and last season’s world premiere of Disney’s When You Wish. Prior to Tuacahn, Janet designed for the Utah Shakespeare Festival for twenty years.
